Artalona Takes 1st at Hoover Invitational

Panther 132 pounder Greg Artalona placed 1st at the 2012 Scott Rohrer Hoover Invitational, one of the toughest tournaments in the state. Artalona beat Zack Louis of Catholic (Baton Rouge, LA) who was 37-3 in the finals by a 6-5 decision in one of the best finals matches of the tourney. 220 pounder TJ Demos took 5th place for the Panthers who will wrestle their next tournament January 16th at Bob Jones.

32nd Annual HHS Invitational

The 32nd Annual Huntsville Invitational will be this Friday and Saturday, Dec 2nd and 3rd at HHS. We hope to see everyone there to support the Panthers at one of the largest tournaments in North Alabama.

Red and Blue Match

The 2nd annual Red and Blue Match will take place Tuesday Nov 15th at 6 pm in the small gym at HHS. A short booster club meeting will be held at 5:30 pm to answer any outstanding questions and to collect booster club dues.

Wrestling Callout Meeting

There will be a wrestling callout meeting for any HHS, HCMS or HMS student interested in wrestling on Thursday Sept. 29th at 7:00 pm in Coach Pate's room 113 at HHS.

ONLY students/parents that have NOT wrestled for HHS before need to attend this meeting.

If your son has wrestled for HHS before, he needs to stop by Coach Pate's room and pick up a packet of paperwork (includes all football players).

Panthers Place Two at State

Greg Artalona took 2nd place in the 130 pound weight class in a heated 4-1 match with defending 119 pound state champ Jordan Simpson of Oxford.

Senior Patrick McDaniel placed 6th at 145 for the Panthers who finished 22nd overall with 28 team points, a marked improvement over last year's total.

Panthers wrestler Greg Artalona will wrestle for the 130 pound State Championship Saturday at the VBC in Huntsville. Artalona defeated Ashton Jones of Clay-Chalkville 4-3 in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

Consolation finals begin Saturday at 9:00 am and will include 145 pounder Patrick McDaniel. Championship finals begin at 1 pm.

The Panthers host Butler, Lee and Grissom Tuesday January 25th at 6 pm for the City Championship at Huntsville High. Regular admission is $5 but anyone that brings a canned food item to donate to Manna House will be admitted free of charge.

Panthers Lose Former Wrestler

2004 HHS Graduate and former wrestler Doug Ravenelle passed away last week at age 25. Doug started wrestling in middle school and competed for former coach Bengie Balentine. Doug placed second in the State at 171 pounds his senior season. He was a member of the University of Alabama recreational wrestling team in 2009-2010.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Ravenelle of Huntsville; father, Ken Ravenelle of Savannah, Ga.; sisters, Alexandrea J. Ravenelle of New York City and Rachel A. Ravenelle of Savannah; maternal grandmother, Priscilla Kelley of Lowell, Mass.; and many other beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Lowell.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked donations to be made to the Huntsville High School Wrestling Boosters, 2304 Billie Watkins Ave., Huntsville, AL 35801 or online at www.hhspantherwrestling.com.

Hewitt Duals

The Panthers opened the season with 5 tough dual matches at the Hewitt Duals on Wednesday. The Panthers took a skeleton crew of wrestlers to face off against some tough 6A competition, and went winless on the day as a team. 112 Keating Mefford and 135 Drew Carson had winning days for the Panthers as they prepare for the Sparkman/Arab Tri-Meet on Tuesday the 30th and to host the 31st Annual Huntsville Invitational at home on Dec 3rd and 4th.

Weight Certifications

Weight certifications and hydration testing are this Saturday October 30th. Wrestlers need to be at the wrestling room no later than 7:30 am, dressed in comfortable, easy to change clothes. Also, bring $20 to pay for the test. We will leave the school at 8:00 am, travel to Bob Jones HS and return around 11 am.
Please continue to drink plenty of water throughout the week leading up to the test.

Panthers Qualify Six for State

The Huntsville Panthers traveled to Pell City for Sectionals over the weekend and qualified six wrestlers for the State Finals at the VBC in Huntsville. Leading the way for the Panthers was Freshman Deundrez Woods at 215 who took second place and was the lone wrestler in the Championship Finals for the Panthers.

Junior Patrick McDaniel at 140 and Freshman Drew Carson at 130 qualified for the second straight year with 4th place finishes in their respective weight classes. First time qualifiers included Senior Nick Charles (3rd at 135), Sophmore Chad Herrin (4th at 160) and Freshman Greg Artalona (4th at 125).

Wrestling begins at 1 pm on Thursday February 11th at the VBC in Huntsville.

The Panthers traveled to Bob Jones on MLK Day to participate in the Dick Clem Invitational. The Panthers took 3rd place overall and Patrick McDaniel took 1st in the 140 lb. class. Greg Artalona was second at 130, Karter Smith 3rd at 145, Chad Herrin 4th at 160, Kevin Charles 4th at 171, TJ Demos 3rd at 189, Deundrez Woods 2nd at 215 and Paul Johnson 2nd at 285.

Sparkman, Bob Jones Dual and Grissom Invitational

The Panthers split their only home dual of the year beating Sparkman and falling to a highly talented Bob Jones team on Thursday at HHS. The Panthers then headed to Grissom for the SportsMED Duals. Although the Panthers were winless in their five dual matches, they had a good showing, losing close matches to 6A foes Thompson, Opelika and Oxford and again to 5A defending champs Scottsboro. Another loss to a powerful Cordova (TN) team left them at 12-26 on dual meets this season.

The JV and Freshman had a good showing at Grissom as they prepare for the upcoming Bob Jones Invitational.

Hartselle and Hoover Trip Canceled

Due to the weather conditions and cancellation of school on Friday, the Varsity trip to Hoover has been canceled.

Hartselle has also canceled the JV/Freshman tournament on Saturday.

Scottsboro Super Duals Results

The Panthers were swept at the Scottsboro Super Duals by some tough competition including the defending 5A champion Scottsboro Wildcats, the defending 6A champion Vestavia Hills Rebels and perennial Tennessee power Baylor. The Panthers head into the stretch run of the season with tournaments in Hoover, at Grissom, Bob Jones and Brookwood, before heading to Pell City for Sectionals.

The Panthers traveled to Buckhorn for the Battlefield Duals and took a loss to host Buckhorn and a 1 point loss to Deshler. That bounced the Panthers to the loser's pool where they swept Hartselle, Sparkman and Westminster Christian. Top performers for the Panthers were Shakur Griffin and Greg Artalona at 130, Drew Carson at 125, Jerry Caudle at 112, Nick Charles at 135 and Zach Smith at 215.

Smoky Mountain Duals Results

The Panthers traveled to Pigeon Forge, TN for the Smoky Mountain Duals last week. The Panthers finished 2-6 overall against some stiff competition, including the Georgia AAA State Champs. Greg Artalona, Zach Smith and TJ Demos all finished at 6-2 while Chad Herrin and Paul Johnson finished 5-3.

The Panthers traveled to Piedmont this past weekend to compete in the Christmas Duals. The Panthers went 5-3 on the weekend with wins over ASB, Lincoln (2), Montgomery Catholic and Darlington. Top performers were Greg Artalona at 130 (8-0), Nick Charles at 135 (6-2), Patrick McDaniel at 140 (6-2) and Zach Smith at 215 (8-0). The Panthers travel to Pigeon Forge HS for the Smoky Mountain Duals on Tuesday.

The Panthers traveled to Fultondale for a long, 2-day tourney that featured some outstanding wrestling. Greg Artalona (130) took 3rd place for the Panthers while Patrick McDaniel (140), Nick Charles (135) and Paul Johnson (285) took 5th place each. Next, the Panthers head to the Piedmont Christmas Duals December 18th and 19th.

30th Annual Huntsville Invitational Results

The Panthers finished 7th at their first double-elimination tourney of the season. Freshman Zach Smith (215) placed second, Junior Paul Johnson(285) finished third, Sophomore Chad Herrin (160) placed fourth and Freshman Greg Artalona (130) placed fourth for Huntsville.

Bob Jones took the overall title. Blake Suttles of Arab was name Most Outstanding Wrestler and his match against Zack Mardis of Scottsboro at 171 was named Best Match.

The Panthers face Arab and Susan Moore on Tuesday before hosting the 30th Annual Huntsville Invitational December 4th and 5th.

Panthers take 6th at State with Two Champs

The Huntsville Panthers finished in 6th place at the Class 6A finals held at the Von Braun Center, ahead of all of their area competition, over three days in February. Jake Henson took a school record 3rd state title and Blake Herrin repeated as the 215 lb. champion to lead the way for the Panthers.
